When a pest population warrants a treatment, fumigants are the best tool to penetrate into structures and commodities without leaving a dangerous residue or harming the environment. However, fumigants can be hazardous and deadly. Safe use of fumigants takes experienced, properly trained and certified professionals. Fumigation Service & Supply have experienced and licensed fumigators that performed hundreds of manufacturing, processing, commercial facilities and storage structure fumigations each year. Safety is of vital importance in every step of the way when preparing and performing fumigation.

Fumigation Service & Supply has the knowledge, capabilities and equipment to fumigate a wide array of structures to control insects, rodents and microbial contaminates safely and effectively.

Fumigation Service & Supply also has the knowledge, capabilities and equipment to fumigate with a wide array of chemicals control insects, rodents and microbial contaminates safely and effectively.

Phosphine or hydrogen phosphine is an effective and widely used fumigant for stored commodity fumigations. Phosphine fumigants have various formulations including: pellets, tablets, blister packs and cylinderized (Eco2Fume® and VaporPhos®). Solid metallic phosphides react with water vapor to generate hydrogen phosphide. Warm, moist air speeds up this reaction while cool, dry air slows it. The faster the reaction takes place, the more heat is achieved which increases the probability of spontaneous combustion. It is essential to follow the label application and handling procedures for phosphine products.

Phosphine is approved for application of raw agricultural commodities, processed foods, animal feed and their ingredients, tobacco and other non-food items. Fumigation Service & Supply has the experience and can provide phosphine fumigations across a variety of storage structures including:

  • Grain bins
  • Flat storages
  • Ground piles
  • Ship holds
  • Shipping containers
  • Warehouses

Fumigation Service & Supply also uses a variety of techniques to fumigate with phosphine safely and effectively. We have the knowledge and equipment to:

  1. Recirculate fumigant (j-system)
  2. Use VaporPhos with the Horn Diluphos System (HDS)
  3. Tarp grain mass with plastic
  4. Seal entire structure (may require the use of lifts)

Sulfuryl fluoride (SF) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless fumigant. SF is absorbed by insects and rodents through inhalation where it causes death by preventing energy production. The dosage rates of SF vary depending on the target pest and temperature. Vikane® is registered for residential fumigations whereas Profume® is registered for commercial fumigations including mills, food processing plants, warehouses and bins.

Sulfuryl fluoride or Profume® fumigations involve intensive sealing of structures, thorough planning, proper placement of the fumigant introduction and monitoring sites and utilization of state-of-the-art equipment for monitoring fumigant concentrations.

Fumigation Service & Supply performs hundreds of sulfuryl fluoride or Profume® fumigations every year. Every fumigation job is different and there are always new things to learn. Fumigation Service & Supply has the knowledge, capabilities and equipment to fumigate with sulfuryl fluoride safely and effectively.

Methyl Bromide (MB) was a widely used fumigant for decades, but since it depletes the stratospheric ozone layer the use of this fumigant has greatly decreased in use. At this time, the only permitted uses for Methyl Bromide in the United States are for:

  1. Quarantine and Preshipment (QPS) to eliminate quarantine pests
  2. Critical Use Exemptions (CUE) designed for uses with no technically or economically feasible alternatives

Fumigation Service & Supply has the experience and capabilities to perform Quarantine and Preshipment (QPS) and Critical Use Exemptions (CUE) fumigations. We operate three USDA / APHIS certified facilities in the Midwest designed to fumigate import and export containers:

  1. Westfield, IN (North of Indianapolis, IN)
  2. Heyworth, IL (South of Bloomington, IL)
  3. Joliet, IL (South of Chicago, IL)

Carbon dioxide is the only approved fumigant to treat organic products that have been infested with insects. Carbon dioxide fumigations need a concentration of 35-60% carbon dioxide at room temperature for 4-21 days. Even at this concentration and duration, fumigation are not always 100% effective. Carbon dioxide kills by dehydrating insects. It causes the insects spiracles to stay open which allows water to be released.

Special tarps or chambers are needed to use carbon dioxide as an organic fumigant. Fumigation Service & Supply has the facilities, monitoring and equipment necessary to treat organic products and organic commodities with carbon dioxide.

Temperature has a direct effect on an insect’s physiology. By changing the temperature you can change an insect’s metabolism, respiration and movement. Heat treatments are a non-toxic and non-residual option to control stored product pests. Increasing the temperature to 122°-133°F for about a 24 hour period provides insect control of all life stages.

Heat treatments can also be performed in combination with fumigants. Increasing temperatures increases an insect’s respiration rate which allows more fumigant to be inhaled producing an overall more effective treatment.

Performing heat treatments or using a combination of heat and fumigant require knowledge and special equipment. Fumigation Service & Supply have the experience, capabilities and equipment to perform heat treatment or a combination of heat and fumigants.

Chlorine dioxide gas is an antimicrobial fumigant used to disinfectant and sterilize contaminated surfaces. It kills and eliminates all forms of microbial life including fungi, viruses, bacteria, protozoa, algae and their spores. Chlorine dioxide is yellowish-green gas that smells somewhat like chlorine bleach, but should not be confused with chlorine gas.

Chlorine dioxide gas can be used as a sterilizer for pharmaceutical, distribution plants, food processing facilities, storage plants, tools and laboratory equipment, environmental surfaces, and clean rooms. Fumigation Service & Supply has the experience, capabilities and equipment to serialize and disinfect high risk microbial outbreaks with chlorine dioxide.

Ethylene oxide or EtO gas is a serializing and disinfecting fumigant that can be used in medical equipment, packaging materials and clothing, surgical and laboratory equipment, processing facilities, spices and seasonings. It is a flammable, colorless gas at temperatures above 54°F and has a faintly sweet smell.

Propylene oxide or PPO is another antimicrobial fumigant used to disinfectant and sterilize contaminated surfaces and commodities. It is the only FDA / EPA authorized disinfectant for sterilizing bacteria (Salmonella), mold and yeast in nuts (almonds, pistachios, etc.) and cocoa powder.
